Trump’s changes to the kennedy Center, including appointing himself chairman and cutting funding for “woke” productions, have drawn criticism. Subscription sales have reportedly declined, and several productions, including “Hamilton,” have canceled performances. Issa Rae, Rhiannon Giddens, Ben Folds and Renée Fleming have also withdrawn from the Kennedy Center.
According to Houston Public Media, some ticket holders donated their tickets upon learning of Trump’s attendance. Drag performers also protested Trump’s ban on drag acts at the theater.
CNN reported that some cast members opted out of performing in protest of Trump’s policies. vice President JD Vance, his wife, Usha, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. accompanied the president.
Despite the protests, some audience members cheered for the president. Trump saeid,”I love Les Mis.We’ve seen it many times. We love it. One of my favorites.” He dismissed concerns about cast boycotts, stating, “I couldn’t care less.Honestly, I couldn’t. All I do is run the country well.”
Vagenesis, a drag queen who protested at the event, told NPR, “Theatre is supposed to be a place of community, a place of storytelling, a place of festivity, joy, catharsis and it should be open and available to all.”
