Los Angeles Immigration Raids Spark Protests Amid⁤ Enforcement Role Debate

Updated June 8, 2025

Los Angeles is experiencing ‌widespread protests following a ⁢series of⁤ Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. Demonstrations, some turning chaotic, involved protesters surrounding federal agents. At ‌least 11 arrests were made Saturday‌ night ⁣for failure to disperse, according to law enforcement officials.

Tom Homan, former border czar under President Trump, asserted that immigration enforcement will continue daily in Los Angeles, regardless of local opposition. He suggested that even elected officials could face arrest if they interfere with ⁢federal agents’ duties. The arrival of the National Guard on sunday, following Trump’s directive, further heightened ‌tensions, with Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom⁤ expressing concerns about potential escalation.

Homan⁤ stated that ICE is prioritizing threats to public safety, citing a‍ raid in‍ the Fashion⁣ District as part of a criminal inquiry. ⁣However, he also indicated that the agency‌ does not differentiate between violent criminals‌ and those with civil immigration violations when enforcing deportation laws. Raids have reportedly targeted workplaces and ⁣areas where day laborers gather.

“I’m telling you what, we’re going to keep enforcing law every day in L.A.,” homan⁤ said. “Every day ‌in L.A., we’re going to enforce immigration law. I don’t care if they like it ⁤or not.”

Homan addressed allegations of ⁤ICE operating at sensitive locations like schools and ‌hospitals as misinformation. He criticized Newsom and California’s “Sanctuary State” law, which limits local authorities’ cooperation with federal‌ immigration enforcement. Homan argued that these policies ‌prioritize criminals over public safety.

Despite the⁤ “Sanctuary State” law, California prisons cooperate with ICE by identifying individuals subject to deportation. Though, the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation does not hold individuals past their release date if ICE‍ fails to take custody.
