Former US President Donald Trump has announced a breakthrough in the escalating border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, stating that both nations have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to work towards peace. The intervention comes as tensions have flared, resulting in casualties and displacement, and just days before potential US trade tariffs are set to impact both countries.
Trump’s Diplomatic Intervention
Speaking from his Scottish golf courses, Trump revealed on Truth Social that he had spoken with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. “Both nations have agreed to instantly meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE!” Trump declared.
Thailand’s acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, confirmed that the Thai side had agreed to the ceasefire in principle. However,he also expressed a desire to “see the sincerity of the Cambodian side in this matter.”
The conflict, which reignited on July 24, has led to the deaths of at least 33 soldiers and civilians, with thousands of Thai and Cambodian nationals displaced.
Trade Talks and Looming Tariffs
Trump also indicated his eagerness to resume trade talks with Cambodia and thailand, emphasizing that such discussions would be more appropriate once the “fighting STOPS.” This intervention is notably significant as it precedes the implementation of US tariffs on goods from both nations, scheduled to take effect on August 1. Businesses importing from Thailand or Cambodia will face a 36% tax unless an agreement is reached beforehand.
The exact nature of Trump’s involvement remains somewhat unclear, especially given that Thailand’s foreign minister, Maris Sangiampongsa, had stated just a day prior that he did not believe mediation from a third country was necessary at that time.malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had previously offered to facilitate talks.
Border Dispute History
Earlier on Saturday,Cambodia had already called for an ”immediate” ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the dispute. Trump’s announcement followed his participation in a golf event at his Trump Turnberry resort in South Ayrshire.
“When all is done, and peace is at hand,I look forward to concluding our trading agreements with both!” Trump wrote, highlighting the potential economic implications of a resolved conflict.
The current clash sees both Thailand and Cambodia accusing each other of initiating the hostilities. Thailand alleges that Cambodia’s military deployed drones for surveillance of Thai troops near the border, while Cambodia claims Thai soldiers violated a prior agreement by advancing towards a Khmer-Hindu temple. The territorial dispute between the two Southeast Asian neighbours has roots stretching back over a century, stemming from border demarcations drawn during the French occupation of Cambodia.
