Trump Claims Rare Earths Deal Reached with China
Updated June 12, 2025
Donald Trump has announced a preliminary agreement with China aimed at easing trade tensions. The deal, according to Trump, will ensure China supplies the U.S. with rare earths and full magnets, critical components for various industries.
In exchange, the U.S. will reportedly ease restrictions on visas for Chinese students. Trump shared the announcement on his Truth Social platform, pending final approval from himself and President Xi Jinping.
The announcement follows discussions in London between U.S. and Chinese officials, seeking to resolve trade disputes that previously resulted in reciprocal tariffs. trump stated the U.S. would receive 55% in tariffs while China would receive 10%.
White House officials clarified that the 55% figure includes tariffs implemented during Trump’s earlier term. Details of the trade agreement and its implementation remain vague, leading to a muted market response, with analysts citing the deal’s “unfinished” nature.
“Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval from President Xi [Jinping] and me,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
The talks in London aimed to address shortcomings in a temporary trade truce established in Geneva last month. The Geneva agreement faltered due to China’s continued restrictions on critical minerals exports, prompting the U.S. to impose export controls on semiconductor design software and other technology goods.

The world awaits further details and official confirmation from both nations regarding the specifics and implementation of this rare earths agreement, and its potential impact on global trade relations.
