U.S. and China Reach Trade Deal after London Talks

President Trump announced on social media that a trade deal with China has been reached. This proclamation follows two days of high-level talks in London, where both countries agreed to return to a trade framework established last month in Geneva.

According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, the talks were “reasonable” and “frank.” The agency emphasized the need for both sides to maintain integrity and fulfill their commitments to implement the consensus reached.
Under the newly agreed trade framework, American tariffs on Chinese goods will increase to 55%, while Chinese tariffs on American goods will be set at 10%, Trump said. Before last month’s trade truce,cumulative customs levies between the two nations had reached as high as 245%.
A key component of the deal involves China supplying rare earth minerals “up front,” Trump stated.Rare earths had been a meaningful sticking point in negotiations, with China previously cutting off much of its exports to the U.S. and Europe. This agreement aims to address the global race for rare earth materials and ensure a stable supply.
Trump also appeared to walk back a previous announcement from Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding the revocation of visas for Chinese students with ties to the chinese Communist Party or those studying in “critical fields.”
“WE WILL PROVIDE TO CHINA WHAT WAS AGREED TO, INCLUDING CHINESE STUDENTS USING OUR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (WHICH HAS ALWAYS BEEN GOOD WITH ME!),” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
