‍ Updated June 13, 2025
⁢

former President Donald ‌Trump announced Wednesday ⁤that the United States and China have reached a deal ‍to end the trade war, pending final approval from himself and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The declaration followed two ⁢days of ‍negotiations in London.

trump took to Truth Social to share the news. He stated that ⁤China would supply “full magnets and any ⁢necessary rare earths” upfront. In return, the U.S. would provide China with previously agreed-upon concessions, including ⁣allowing Chinese students to attend American colleges and universities.

Trump ‌added that the U.S. would receive 55% tariffs, ‌while China would receive 10%. He characterized the relationship between⁤ the two countries as “excellent” and anticipated that he and President Xi would collaborate to further open China to American trade, calling it a “great WIN for both countries!!” The new trade role is expected to⁣ boost both economies.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the president was reviewing the details of the agreement. “What the ⁢president heard, he liked,” Leavitt said, adding that china had agreed to open its markets to⁤ the United states separately from⁣ the deal. She ‍emphasized that the U.S. and China are “in a great place right now.”

However, Treasury ‍Secretary Scott Bessent offered a more cautious ‌assessment during a House Ways and Means‍ Committee meeting on Wednesday. Bessent stated that China’s economy is “the most imbalanced economy in the world” and⁣ is facing a real estate downturn. He argued that China should not be allowed to “export their way back to prosperity,” which would negatively impact living standards in the U.S.⁤ and other countries.

“Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President‍ Xi and ⁣me,” Trump wrote.

What’s next

U.S. and Chinese officials are expected to continue discussions ⁤to finalize the agreement. The details of the deal and its potential impact on various sectors remain to be seen as the⁤ two nations navigate this complex trade relationship.
