President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that the United States and China have finalized a⁣ trade agreement.According to the president, the deal involves China providing ⁢magnets and‍ rare earth minerals, while the U.S.will permit Chinese students to attend American colleges and universities.

Trump stated on Truth Social that ⁢the U.S. would receive a total of 55% in tariffs, while China would receive 10%. He described the relationship as “excellent.”

A White House official clarified that the 55% tariff on Chinese imports includes a⁤ 10%⁤ baseline reciprocal tariff,a 20% tariff related to fentanyl⁣ trafficking, and a 25% tariff reflecting pre-existing measures. China, in turn, would levy a 10% tariff on U.S. imports.

The agreement, Trump said, is contingent on final approval from himself and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The agreement follows two days of intense negotiations in London, were U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said a⁢ framework deal had been reached. This framework builds upon a previous agreement in Geneva aimed at easing retaliatory tariffs.

The Geneva agreement had⁤ faced challenges due to China’s restrictions on critical minerals exports. The Trump management responded with export controls, limiting shipments of semiconductor design software and aircraft to China.

“FULL MAGNETS, AND ANY⁣ NECESSARY⁤ RARE ⁢EARTHS, WILL ⁢BE SUPPLIED, UP FRONT, BY CHINA. LIKEWISE,WE WILL PROVIDE TO CHINA WHAT WAS AGREED⁣ TO,INCLUDING CHINESE STUDENTS USING OUR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (WHICH HAS ⁢ALWAYS BEEN GOOD⁣ WITH ME!),” Trump said.

What’s next

The deal awaits final ⁢approval from both President Trump and President Xi.⁣ The ⁤agreement aims to de-escalate trade tensions that have‍ impacted global markets and supply chains.
