Donald Trump has entered the ongoing conversation about the future of late-night television, directly addressing claims that he was responsible for the end of “The late Show.” the former President vehemently denied these accusations, attributing the show’s demise to a critically important financial deficit and a perceived absence of talent.
Trump’s Assertion: Financial Woes and Talent Deficit
In a recent statement, Trump declared, “Everybody is saying that I was solely responsible for the firing of Stephen Colbert from CBS, ‘Late Night.’ That is not true!” He elaborated on his reasoning, stating, “The reason he was fired was a pure lack of TALENT, and the fact that this deficiency was costing CBS $50 Million Dollars a year in losses – And it was only going to get WORSE!”
This assertion directly contradicts any notion that his personal influence led to the show’s cancellation, instead placing the blame squarely on the program’s perceived performance and financial viability.
Targeting Other Late-night Hosts
Trump didn’t stop at addressing Colbert’s situation. He also set his sights on other prominent late-night hosts, predicting their eventual downfall. He specifically called out Jimmy Kimmel, host of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” as “even less talented,” and Jimmy Fallon, who helms NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” as “weak, and very insecure.”
“Next up will be an even less talented Jimmy Kimmel, and then, a weak, and very insecure, Jimmy Fallon,” Trump added. He further commented on the dynamics of the entertainment industry, asserting, “The only real question is, who will go frist? Show Biz and Television is a very simple business. If you get Ratings, you can say or do anything. If you don’t, you always become a victim. Colbert became a victim to himself, the other two will follow.”
Seth Meyers Reflects on an Uncertain Future
While Trump’s comments focused on Colbert, Kimmel, and Fallon, another late-night personality, Seth Meyers, has also recently spoken about the precarious nature of his own show, “Late Night With Seth Meyers.” Though not directly named in Trump’s post, Meyers acknowledged that the fate of his program is ”outside of my control.”
Meyers shared his evolving perspective on the pressures of the industry, stating, “There is this weird thing that I feel like I shifted from fearing that I wouldn’t be good enough. And now my fear is weirdly more outside of my control, which is … just at some point, the ecosystem might not support [late-night].” His candid remarks highlight a broader concern within the late-night television landscape regarding its long-term sustainability.
