Europe’s Economic Response Halts Trump’s Greenland Pursuit
The possibility of Denmark or Europe defending Greenland against the United States was widely ridiculed within the White House. Danish influence was dismissed as “irrelevant” and Europe was characterized as diminished. however, Europe successfully defended Greenland last week when plans for a forceful economic response from the European Union destabilized U.S. markets, leading President Trump to abandon his long-held ambition to acquire the territory.
“We’ll get by with a little help from our friends,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen wrote in a guest book at Chequers on Thursday, referencing the Beatles song while visiting with the British Prime Minister.
Despite the resolution, concerns remain. Frederiksen met with local leaders in Nuuk on Friday and offered reassurance to Greenlandic citizens fearful of U.S. intervention. She did not comment on whether tensions with Washington had eased.
The Greenland crisis represents a turning point for U.S. allies. Leaders gathered at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, last week openly acknowledged difficulties in the relationship with the United States and a shift in the global order. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated in a widely circulated speech, “The middle powers must act together.”
Trump withdrew from his pursuit of Greenland after the EU’s economic threat.
