In a recent progress, the Trump administration has ordered legal service providers working with unaccompanied migrant children to cease their operations, according to an internal memo obtained by a reputable source. this move is part of a series of actions targeting immigrants in the United States, this time focusing on children and teenagers who crossed the southern border unaccompanied.
Department of Interior’s Order and Its Impact
The Department of Interior sent the order to the Acacia Center for Justice, a nonprofit institution that claims to assist nearly 26,000 children in and released from the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) custody. ORR, under the Health and Human Services Department, is responsible for the care of unaccompanied migrant children.
“The administration’s decision to suspend this program is a direct assault on due process,” said Shaina Aber, executive director of the Acacia Center for Justice. “It disproportionately affects vulnerable children, putting those who have already endured severe trauma at further risk of harm or exploitation.”
Condemnation from advocacy Groups
The Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project, which provides legal services and “Know Your Rights” presentations to children in government custody, also criticized the move. “Without our services, children of all ages will have to navigate immigration court alone,” said Roxana Avila-Cimpeanu, the Florence Project’s deputy director.
Potential Consequences and Historical Context
While the stop-work order may not immediately affect children already represented, the sudden halt of funding could lead to downsizing or closure of these organizations. This is not the first time the Trump administration has targeted legal aid for immigrants. Days after Trump’s inauguration, the Justice Department ordered legal service providers to stop assisting immigrants in detention.
According to recent statistics from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the number of unaccompanied children apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border has been steadily increasing, reaching an all-time high in 2024. This latest action by the Trump administration raises concerns about the well-being and legal rights of these vulnerable individuals.
