The Director of National Intelligence and the Attorney General have 15 days to present a plan to Trump for the full disclosure of the JFK assassination-related records. Similarly, they must present a plan within 45 days for the complete disclosure of records related to the assassinations of RFK and MLK.
Even though no law mandates the release of the RFK and MLK assassination-related information, Trump determined that "publication is in the public interest."
The public has long awaited the release of these files, with some believing they hold secrets that have laid dormant for decades. Regulations have kept them classified due to potential exposure of sensitive intelligence sources and methods. However, in recent years, more documents were declassified, though some remained under wraps.
Robert F. Kennedy, then a New York senator, was shot in the kitchen of a Los Angeles hotel celebrating his victory in the California Democratic presidential primary in 1968. Five years earlier, his brother, President Kennedy, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. Martin Luther King Jr., the renowned civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was assassinated in Memphis in 1968 while supporting striking sanitation workers.
The Biden administration cited the need to scrutinize the documents to ensure no risks are associated with their publication. The Warren Commission, which investigated the JFK assassination, concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. However, numerous conspiracy theories persist, fueling speculation about the true masterminds behind the tragedies.
The impending release of these long-secret files has reignited public interest and renewed debates, promising to shed new light on these pivotal events in American history.
