President Donald Trump and Iran have agreed to a two-week ceasefire, suspending U.S. Military attacks on Iran in exchange for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to marine traffic.

The agreement was announced on April 7, 2026, shortly before a deadline set by the U.S. President. President Trump stated he would suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks provided that Iran allows the passage of ships through the vital waterway.

Iran has agreed to allow the safe passage of marine traffic through the Strait of Hormuz for the two-week period, provided that vessels coordinate with Iranian armed forces. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi further stated that Iran will cease military attacks as long as it is not attacked.

Iranian 10-Point Peace Plan

The ceasefire follows the presentation of a 10-point plan by Iran aimed at ending the conflict with the United States. This proposal, reportedly delivered through mediators in Pakistan, includes several key demands from the Iranian government.

Iranian 10-Point Peace Plan

According to reports from the Times of Israel, the Iranian plan includes the following requirements:

  • The lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions.
  • U.S. Acceptance of Iran’s uranium enrichment program.
  • The withdrawal of the United States military from the Middle East.
  • An end to attacks on Iran and its allies.
  • Continued and expanded Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council stated that adopting such a resolution would make these agreements binding under international law and represent a significant diplomatic victory for the nation. The United States has not yet provided a formal response to these 10-point demands.

Escalation and Military Action

The ceasefire comes after a period of intense military escalation. Prior to the agreement, the U.S. Military conducted an intense wave of strikes targeting bridges across Iran and Kharg Island, which serves as the country’s primary oil export hub. A U.S. Official told NBC News that dozens of military targets on Kharg Island were struck overnight.

The tension reached a peak when President Trump issued a stark warning ahead of his deadline, stating that a whole civilization will die tonight if a deal was not reached. He had previously threatened massive attacks on civilian infrastructure, dismissing concerns regarding potential war crimes.

The human cost of the broader regional conflict has been significant. Reports indicate that more than 3,400 people have been killed across the Middle East, including over 1,500 deaths in Lebanon and 23 deaths in Israel.

Diplomatic Developments and Hostage Release

Parallel to the ceasefire negotiations, a breakthrough occurred regarding the detention of American citizens. The Iran-backed militia group Kataib Hezbollah announced the release of American journalist Shelly Kittleson, who had been kidnapped in Iraq the previous week.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the U.S. Was relieved by her freedom and was working to support her safe departure from Iraq.

The two nations are scheduled to engage in further diplomatic talks in Pakistan later during the week of April 8, 2026, to discuss the conflict and the proposed peace terms.
