Trump Deploys Nuclear Submarines: Russia President Tweet
Putin Offers No Hint of Concessions as He Seeks “stable” Peace in Ukraine
Donald Trump expresses frustration with Russian President Vladimir putin’s stalling tactics on brokering a ceasefire, while Putin reiterates his desire for a lasting peace on terms that remain undefined.
Donald Trump has voiced growing frustration with Russian president Vladimir Putin, whom he claims has been stalling on Trump’s efforts to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Trump, who had previously promised to achieve this in just 24 hours, described Russia’s continued attacks on civilian areas as “disgusting” during a recent White House address.
“I go home. I tell the first lady, ‘You know, I spoke to Vladimir today. We had a marvelous conversation.’ She said, ‘Oh, really? Another city was just hit,'” Trump recounted last month, highlighting the stark contrast between his optimistic pronouncements and the ongoing reality on the ground.
Putin, though, has not responded to Trump’s ultimatum. On Friday, he stated his desire for a “lasting and stable peace” in Ukraine, but offered no indication that he was willing to make any concessions to achieve it. This comes after a week marked by renewed Russian missile and drone attacks that caused death and destruction across ukraine.
“We need a lasting and stable peace on solid foundations that woudl satisfy both Russia and Ukraine and would ensure the security of both countries,” Putin told journalists on friday, a week before a new deadline imposed by Trump for hostilities to cease.
Putin has a history of claiming interest in peace, but typically only on terms that are unacceptable to Kyiv. Last week, the third round of direct talks between Russia and Ukraine took place in Istanbul. However, the discussions broke up in less than an hour, and have so far yielded no agreements beyond prisoner exchanges.
In what appeared to be a veiled reference to Trump’s public statements, Putin remarked on Friday, “As for any disappointments on the part of anyone, all disappointments arise from inflated expectations. This is a well-known general rule.” This statement suggests a dismissal of any pressure or deadlines imposed by external parties, emphasizing Russia’s own timeline and conditions for any potential resolution.
