New York Republican Club seeks Mamdani Deportation After Primary Win
Updated June 26, 2025
Following Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, the New York Young Republican Club is urging President Donald Trump to revoke his U.S. citizenship and deport him. The club cited the Communist Control Act as justification for the demand.
In a post on X, the New York Republican Club called for action from President Trump’s aides, specifically tagging Stephen Miller, White House deputy chief of staff, and immigration advisor Tom Homan. The post stated that Mamdani should not be allowed to “destroy our beloved city of New York,” and claimed the Communist Control Act allows Trump to revoke Mamdani’s citizenship.
Mamdani, 33, a democratic socialist and New York state legislator, gained national attention after defeating former Gov. andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary. His progressive platform includes rent freezes, free public transit, global childcare, and city-run grocery stores.
Born in Uganda and naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2018, Mamdani’s rise signifies a generational and ideological shift in New York politics. He has garnered endorsements from prominent progressive figures such as Rep. alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.
Legal experts note that the Republican’s deportation demand, based on the 1954 Communist Control Act,lacks legal standing given Mamdani’s documented U.S. citizenship. The act, which formally outlawed the Communist Party, has rarely been invoked in recent decades.
This is not the first time Mamdani has faced such attacks. Earlier this month, Republican Council Member Vickie paladin also called for his deportation on X.
Mamdani responded to the earlier demand by condemning it as part of a broader wave of rhetoric from “Donald Trump’s authoritarian governance,” which he said has included death threats and Islamophobic attacks. “This is what Trump and his sycophants have wrought,” Mamdani said in a statement.
What’s next
The call for Mamdani’s deportation is unlikely to gain traction, but it highlights the intense political polarization surrounding his candidacy as he moves toward the general election.
