Washington D.C. – White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt provided an update on President Donald Trump’s health Thursday, addressing concerns about swelling in his ankles and visible bruising on his hand, which she stated were covered by makeup. Leavitt read from a doctor’s letter intended too clarify these issues.
mild Swelling and Chronic Venous Insufficiency
According to Leavitt, President Trump himself noticed “mild swelling” in his lower legs, prompting an evaluation by the White House medical unit. The tests conducted revealed no signs of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease. though, the evaluation did identify “chronic venous insufficiency,” a condition Leavitt explained is quite common among older adults.
Understanding Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when the small valves within leg veins, which are crucial for pushing blood against gravity back up to the heart, gradually lose thier effectiveness. This condition is particularly prevalent in individuals over the age of 70, and President Trump recently celebrated his 79th birthday.
Leavitt elaborated on common recommendations for managing this condition, which often include weight loss, regular exercise like walking, and periodically elevating the legs. In some instances, individuals may be advised to wear compression stockings. While severe cases can led to complications such as lower leg sores, known as ulcers, Leavitt confirmed that blood clots, a potential cause of such issues, were tested for and ruled out in President Trump’s case.
Hand Bruising: A Combination of Factors
Regarding the bruising observed on President Trump’s hand, which Leavitt noted was covered with makeup, she stated that the discoloration is “consistent” with irritation stemming from his “frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin.”
President’s Health declared Excellent
Concluding the briefing, Leavitt affirmed that “the president remains in excellent health.” She also committed to making the doctor’s letter public, offering further transparency on the matter.
