President Donald Trump announced on May 19, 2026, that he canceled a planned military strike against Iran at the last moment, opting instead to pursue a diplomatic resolution.

The U.S. President stated that he renounced the attack in favor of what he described as serious negotiations with the Iranian government. According to reports, Trump believes there are very good chances of reaching a formal agreement with Iran to resolve ongoing tensions.

The announcement comes amid heightened instability in the Middle East, where the prospect of direct military conflict between the United States and Iran has remained a central concern for regional security and global oil markets.

In response to the shift toward diplomacy, Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian emphasized the conditions under which Tehran would engage with Washington. Pezeshkian stated that dialogue does not mean capitulation, signaling that while Iran may be open to talks, it will not surrender its core positions.

Despite the diplomatic opening mentioned by the U.S. Administration, the Iranian military has maintained a posture of readiness. An Iranian military leader warned that the country’s armed forces currently have the finger on the trigger, suggesting that Iran remains prepared for military action if negotiations fail or if the U.S. Resumes its plans for an attack.

The current situation reflects a volatile balance between President Trump’s expressed optimism for a deal and the Iranian government’s insistence on sovereignty and military deterrence.
