The United States struck a major bridge in Iran on Thursday, prompting a sharp escalation in tensions as President Donald Trump warned of further attacks. The strike on the B1 bridge, linking Karaj to Tehran, killed at least eight people and injured nearly 100, according to Iranian state media. The attack occurred as the Israeli military also launched strikes against Iran, and global oil prices surged.

Trump claimed responsibility for the destruction of the bridge, sharing footage on his Truth Social platform of the structure collapsing. He warned that “much more to follow” if Iran does not reach a settlement to end the five-week-long conflict initiated by the US and Israel on February 28th.

Bridge Strike and Rising Oil Prices

The B1 bridge, a recently constructed suspension bridge costing $400 million and standing 136 meters high, was reportedly struck twice. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has reportedly asked Army Chief of Staff Gen Randy George to step down, according to sources cited by CBS News and the BBC. Brent crude futures rose 7.78% to $109.03 a barrel following the attacks.

Iranian authorities and civilians have reacted strongly to Trump’s comments, with many condemning his statement that Iran “belongs” in the “Stone Age.” The European Union is considering increasing its naval presence in the Strait of Hormuz to protect shipping routes disrupted by the ongoing war.

Regional Escalation and International Response

In addition to the strikes in Iran, new attacks were reported in Israel. Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates all reported intercepting drones and missiles. Significant explosions occurred at Iran’s Isfahan missile base. The Russian foreign ministry has issued a statement expressing concern over the escalating tensions.

“The biggest bridge in Iran comes tumbling down, never to be used again — Much more to follow! This proves TIME FOR IRAN TO MAKE A DEAL BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE, AND THERE IS NOTHING LEFT OF WHAT STILL COULD BECOME A GREAT COUNTRY!”

The US strike on the B1 bridge is believed to be aimed at disrupting supply lines for drones and missiles used by Iranian forces. Iranian state TV reported that the country’s military has identified bridges in American-allied Middle East nations as potential targets for retaliation.

As the conflict nears the end of its fifth week, the situation remains highly volatile. Reports indicate mounting desperation among Iranians, with many struggling to cope with the ongoing war. The UK and its allies are discussing potential sanctions to prevent Iran from blocking the Strait of Hormuz.
