President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he is extending the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely at the request of Pakistan, which has been mediating talks between the two countries.
The extension was announced just hours before the existing ceasefire was set to expire, with Trump stating on Truth Social that the U.S. Military will continue the blockade of Iranian ports while remaining ready and able to act.
Trump said the move was made to give Iranian officials more time to present a “unified proposal” in response to U.S. Negotiating positions, adding that the ceasefire will remain in place until Iran submits its proposal or talks reach a conclusion one way or the other.
The decision came at the direct request of Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whom Trump cited in his announcement as having asked the U.S. To hold its attack on Iran.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif publicly thanked Trump for the extension on X, stating that Pakistan would continue its earnest efforts toward a negotiated settlement of the conflict.
An adviser to Iran’s Parliamentary Speaker, Mahdi Mohammadi, responded critically to the announcement on X, writing that “Trump’s ceasefire extension means nothing, the losing side cannot dictate terms.”
Despite the ceasefire, reports emerged on April 21 that an Iranian attack targeted a container ship off the coast of Oman, highlighting ongoing tensions even as diplomatic efforts continue.
U.S. Officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, held emergency meetings at the White House following the announcement, after Vance canceled a planned trip to Islamabad due to lack of response from Tehran on participation in talks.
The extension aims to create space for renewed negotiations toward a nuclear deal to end the broader conflict, with both sides maintaining military readiness while pursuing diplomatic channels.
