Trump Fainting: Weight Loss Injection Press Conference
Trump Announces Lower Prices for Weight Loss Medications
Former US President Donald Trump announced agreements with pharmaceutical companies Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk on March 28, 2024, to lower teh cost of popular weight loss drugs. The agreements aim to make appetite suppressants Zepbound and wegovy more affordable for Americans.During the press conference at the White House, a participant collapsed, prompting a temporary interruption.
Trump characterized the agreement as a “triumph for American patients,” stating it would “save lives and improve the health of millions and millions of Americans.” Representatives from both pharmaceutical companies were present during the announcement.
Lower Prices for Weight loss Drugs
Currently, weight-loss injections like Zepbound and Wegovy can cost US citizens over $1,000 per month (approximately €870.17 as of November 6, 2024). Under the new agreement, prices are expected to fall to around $350 per month. Weight loss pills, still awaiting approval, could be priced at $150 per month.
Individuals covered by Medicare and Medicaid, and also seniors and those with low incomes, are expected to benefit from these reduced prices. The medications will be accessible starting in January 2025 through a government website, TrumpRx.gov.
In exchange for the price reductions, the Trump administration pledged to lower import tariffs for Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk for the next three years and expedite the approval processes for their medications. Zepbound and Wegovy are classified as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which work by regulating blood sugar levels and increasing feelings of fullness.
Trump has repeatedly criticized the higher cost of prescription drugs in the United States compared to Europe and has been actively pressuring pharmaceutical companies to lower prices. The United States has one of the highest rates of obesity in the developed world, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Press Conference Interrupted by Medical Incident
During Trump’s remarks, a man behind him collapsed. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that the individual was a guest of one of the pharmaceutical companies and that several government employees instantly provided assistance. The press conference was briefly paused. leavitt reported that the man’s condition improved after receiving medical attention.
