NRC ⁣Commissioner Ousted Amid Nuclear Safety Debate

Updated June 16, 2025

The NRC,⁣ established by Congress in‍ 1974, is responsible for overseeing nuclear reactors and protecting the public from radiation exposure. It has traditionally operated with a⁣ degree of independence from the ⁣White House, with commissioners serving five-year terms.

Edwin Lyman, director of nuclear power safety at the Union of Concerned Scientists, expressed concern that the ⁢removal, along ‍with othre actions by the governance, could negatively affect nuclear safety. He emphasized the importance of the ⁤NRC making decisions based on public health and safety, without considering the financial interests of the nuclear industry.

Hanson,in a statement, said he devoted his term to “preserving the independence, integrity and bipartisan nature of ⁤the world’s gold standard nuclear safety institution,” adding that he has “full trust and confidence in⁢ their commitment to serve‍ the American⁢ people by protecting public health safety and the environment.”

Last month,President Trump signed an executive order calling for extensive reforms to the NRC. the order seeks a ⁣”wholesale⁣ revision” of the agency’s safety regulations, in collaboration with⁤ the White House ‍Office of Data and Regulatory Affairs ‍and the Department of ⁤Government⁢ Efficiency. It also proposes staff reductions and a review of certain radiation safety standards.

The executive order was among four signed⁢ by the president to promote the nuclear industry. Industry executives, including one whose company had ‍a⁢ reactor design previously rejected by ⁣the NRC,⁣ attended the signing.
