Trump Policies Raise Free Speech Concerns for 2026 FIFA World Cup

A leading fans’ group is warning that potential restrictions on free speech under the Trump administration could undermine the spirit of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The concerns arise as the U.S., co-hosting the tournament with Mexico and Canada, has tightened its stance on immigration and visas.
Ronan Evain, executive director of Football Supporters Europe, emphasized the importance of celebrating and expressing passion at the World cup. He stated that any attempt to curtail fundamental rights, including free speech, would betray the essence of football.Evain also voiced concerns about potential discrimination against fans based on political views or national origin.
The U.S.currently has a travel ban in place for 12 countries, including Iran, a potential participant in the 2026 World Cup. Human Rights Watch is urging FIFA to use its influence to ensure the rights of all teams, staff, media, and fans are respected, irrespective of nationality, gender identity, religion, or opinion.
The White House has assured that the travel ban will not affect players or support staff for the Club World Cup or World Cup teams.
