Trump Dismisses Intelligence on Iran’s Nuclear Ambitions
Updated June 18,2025
Former President Donald Trump has publicly contradicted the U.S. Intelligence Community’s assessment of Iran’s nuclear program. Despite testimony from his own Director of National intelligence, Trump claimed Iran was on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon.
In testimony before the House intelligence Committee, then-Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard stated that Iran was not actively building a nuclear weapon and that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had not authorized the program, which was suspended in 2003. Though, Trump dismissed this assessment, asserting, “I don’t care what she said. I think they were very close to having one.”
This instance is reminiscent of Trump’s first term, marked by frequent clashes with American intelligence agencies. He famously sided with Russian president Vladimir Putin over the intelligence community regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election. He also accused former officials of treason and reportedly clashed with then-DNI Dan Coats over political conflicts.
During his management, Trump nominated loyalists to intelligence positions, including naming Gabbard as DNI and John Ratcliffe as CIA director, after Ratcliffe demonstrated his loyalty.
