Former President Donald Trump indicated a willingness to “do something” in Greenland, potentially including a purchase or important increase in U.S. military presence, citing concerns about Russian or Chinese influence. He made the remarks on Friday, January 5, 2024, suggesting action irrespective of Greenland’s consent.
Strategic Concerns and Potential Acquisition
Trump expressed the belief that the United States must act in Greenland to prevent its occupation by Russia or China. He stated, “We’re going to do something in Greenland whether they like it or not, because if we don’t, Russia or China will occupy Greenland and we won’t have Russia or China as neighbors.” This statement echoes past discussions during his presidency about potentially purchasing Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Current U.S. Military Presence in Greenland
Currently, the U.S. maintains a limited military presence in greenland, consisting of approximately 150 personnel stationed at Pituffik Space Base in the northwestern part of the country. this base is operated by the U.S. Space Force. Historically, the U.S. had a much larger military footprint in Greenland, with around 10,000 troops deployed during the Cold War.
Rejection of Increased Forces as Sufficient
When questioned about whether an agreement to increase the number of U.S. forces in Greenland would be sufficient to address his concerns, Trump responded negatively on January 5, 2024. This suggests he is considering options beyond simply bolstering the existing military presence. It’s worth noting the U.S. and Russia already share a maritime border of approximately 49 kilometers (30 miles) near the shores of Alaska.
