Trump Health Care Plan: Cost Cuts & Congressional Approval
Trump Administration Announces “The Great Healthcare Plan”
The Trump administration announced ”The Great Healthcare Plan” on January 15, 2026, aiming to lower healthcare costs in the U.S. The plan focuses on lowering prescription drug prices, redirecting government subsidies to consumers, and increasing price clarity. The announcement coincides with the end of Affordable care Act (ACA) open enrollment in most states.
The proposal includes sending federal funds directly to patients to help cover healthcare expenses. As President Trump stated in a White House video, “The government is going to pay the money directly to you…and then you take the money and buy your own health care.”
Implementation of the plan, including direct payments, requires Congressional action. Republicans in Congress are currently negotiating a bill to extend enhanced ACA tax credits, which are set to expire.
