Trump India Tariffs: Modi Friend, BRICS Attack on Dollar
Trump Slaps 25% Tariff on India, Cites high tariffs and Russia Trade
Donald Trump has announced a notable new tariff of 25% on India, coupled with a penalty, citing the country’s high trade barriers and its continued energy and military equipment purchases from Russia. The former President declared this move on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating the new measures will take effect from August 1, 2025.
Trump’s Grievances: Tariffs and Russia Ties
In his characteristic direct style, Trump expressed his long-standing frustrations with India’s trade practices. “Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country,” he wrote.
He further elaborated on India’s relationship with Russia, a point of contention for the former president. “India has always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE – ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!” Trump declared.
The New Trade Measures
The direct consequence of these grievances, according to Trump’s post,is the imposition of a substantial 25% tariff on India. “INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST 1st.THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!” he concluded. This declaration follows a previous action on April 22,when Trump had initially imposed a 26% tariff on Indian goods entering the US. Though, those levies were later paused. The latest declaration signals a hardening of his stance on trade relations with India, notably considering its geopolitical dealings.
