Nearly two months after the Supreme Court mandated the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia,whom the Trump administration had illegally deported to el Salvador,the directive was finally followed.Abrego Garcia’s return coincided with the unsealing of a grand jury indictment in Tennessee, dated May 21, charging him with alien smuggling and conspiracy.
Abrego Garcia was among a group of immigrants deported to El Salvador in March without due process,despite a court order. Although originally from El Salvador, Abrego Garcia had a “protection of removal” order, making his deportation illegal, according to the Supreme Court.
The Trump administration initially resisted complying with the Supreme Court, Maryland district court, and Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals orders. officials claimed they could not return Abrego Garcia, as he was in El Salvador’s custody, despite the U.S. government’s financial support for immigrant detention there.
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, “we’re grateful to President [Nayib] Bukele for agreeing to return him to our country,” while maintaining the pretense that El salvador’s permission was necessary. “This is what American justice looks like.”
ABC News reported that Ben Schrader, a prosecutor in Tennessee, resigned due to concerns that the case against Abrego Garcia was politically motivated.
The indictment alleges Abrego Garcia smuggled undocumented aliens,is associated with MS-13,transported gang members,exploited his MS-13 status,transported children unsafely,abused female migrants,and trafficked firearms and narcotics.
