Trump Orders Iran Strikes Amid Rising Tensions
In an unprovoked act, the U.S. military, under President Donald Trump’s orders, launched strikes on three iranian sites, marking a major escalation in the region. The strikes followed an earlier attack by Israel on Iran on June 13, which has fueled an ongoing conflict between the two nations.
Trump announced via Truth Social that U.S. forces bombed Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.
iran’s Atomic Energy Organization confirmed the attacks, calling them a violation of international law and the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Iranian officials and news outlets also reported the strikes.
Despite the ongoing conflict with Israel, Iran has not directly targeted U.S. bases.Trump demanded Iran’s surrender in his announcement.
“NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE!” Trump wrote, adding, “IRAN MUST NOW AGREE TO END THIS WAR.”
The U.S. has now officially entered the war, after providing support to Israel. Politicians and others have advocated for conflict with Iran for years.
In a brief address, Trump threatened further strikes if Iran does not “make peace,” labeling Iran the “bully of the Middle East.” He said the strikes would diminish the threat to Israel, which he said has been relentlessly attacking and invading countries and territories around it for decades.
“This cannot continue. There will be either peace, or there will be tragedy for Iran far greater then we have witnessed over the last eight days. Remember, there are many targets left,” Trump said.
Lawmakers criticized the strikes, calling them unconstitutional becuase domestic law requires Congressional approval for unprovoked military action. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., called for Trump’s impeachment.
“The president’s disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers… It is indeed absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the strikes and urged de-escalation through diplomacy.
“This is a risky escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security. there is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world,” Guterres said.
