Health Impacts of US strikes on Nuclear Facilities Assessed

Updated June 22, 2025

Experts suggest⁤ that ⁤while U.S. attacks on nuclear enrichment facilities could have serious health consequences, they are unlikely ⁣too ⁤cause a full-scale nuclear disaster.⁢ The primary health risk stems from the potential release of uranium hexafluoride, a highly corrosive gas contained ⁣within centrifuges.

Stephan Frühling, a nuclear weapons expert at Australian National⁣ University, saeid destroying an enrichment plant would create “very nasty local contamination” due to the release of the corrosive and toxic gas.

Edward Obbard, director of the Nuclear⁤ Innovation Center at the University of New⁢ South Wales, contrasted the situation with the ⁣Chernobyl disaster in 1986, stating, “itS not what people generally think of as a kind of nuclear accident.” ‍He added that the relatively low radioactivity of the uranium means “it makes a mess, but it’s not gonna be a kind of nuclear ⁣mess.”

However, Rafael Mariano Grossi,⁢ director-general of the International ⁤Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), cautioned⁤ last‍ week that armed attacks on nuclear facilities ⁣”could result in radioactive releases with grave consequences.”

grossi noted that ‍after Israel’s ⁣recent attack⁣ on the⁢ Natanz facility, radiological and chemical ⁢contamination occurred within the compound. He said that inhaled or ⁣ingested uranium poses a important danger, although the IAEA reported that radiation levels outside the facility remained unchanged. The full impact of potential U.S.‍ strikes remains unclear.

What’s next

International agencies will continue monitoring the situation at⁤ nuclear facilities and assess the potential⁤ consequences⁤ of any‍ attacks, focusing on minimizing health risks and preventing‍ radiological contamination.
