Trump Ireland Visit: Possible Trip for Irish Open Golf Tournament in September

Trump Ireland Visit: Possible Trip for Irish Open Golf Tournament in September

February 26, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

DUBLIN, Ireland – A potential visit to Ireland by U.S. President Donald Trump in September is gaining traction, coinciding with the Irish Open golf tournament at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg, County Clare. U.S. Ambassador to Ireland Edward Walsh indicated the possibility of the visit, though official confirmation remains pending.

The Irish Open, scheduled for September 10-13, will be hosted at the Co. Clare resort, which Trump purchased in 2014. This marks the first time the tournament will be held at the Trump International Golf Links & Hotel. Walsh stated, “We do have a potential presidential visit at the Irish Open in September,” during an American Chamber of Commerce Ireland event in Dublin.

While the prospect of a presidential visit has generated considerable speculation, Irish officials are proceeding with cautious optimism. Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris acknowledged the heightened discussion surrounding a potential trip, noting it “probably heightened when it was revealed that the Irish Open…was going to take place in Doonbeg next September.” However, Harris emphasized that the State has not yet received official confirmation from the U.S. Government. He added, “it is a live possibility,” and affirmed that President Trump would be welcomed “as any other US president has been,” should he choose to visit, stressing the importance of continued engagement.

This wouldn’t be Trump’s first visit to Ireland as president. He made an official visit in 2019, staying at the Trump International Golf Club in Doonbeg. He also visited in a personal capacity in 2023. The upcoming potential visit comes as Taoiseach Micheál Martin is scheduled to meet with President Trump at the White House next month during the annual Saint Patrick’s Day event in Washington. Martin previously stated the meeting would be “an opportunity to celebrate the warm and historic friendship between the US and Ireland.”

The possibility of President Trump’s return to Ireland has sparked debate, particularly given the evolving geopolitical landscape and the current state of relations between the European Union and the Trump administration. While the annual Saint Patrick’s Day visit to the White House is a long-standing tradition, some have voiced concerns about maintaining the practice given President Trump’s policies. However, Harris underscored the importance of diplomacy, stating that it’s crucial to engage even when disagreements exist, and to remain true to Ireland’s values.

The Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg has been a focal point of attention since Trump’s acquisition in 2014. The resort is currently operated by TIGL Ireland Enterprises LTD, owned by the Donald J Trump Revocable Trust, with President Trump as the sole beneficiary. Recent developments include planning permission granted for a new ballroom, described by Eric Trump as set to be “spectacular,” involving the demolition of existing structures and Doughmore House.

Eric Trump previously indicated his father’s intention to attend the Irish Open in September, stating, “I think he’s gonna be here. He really wants to be here, and I know Rory McIlroy definitely wants him here.” This statement adds further weight to the growing anticipation surrounding a potential presidential visit.

Sports Minister Patrick O’Donovan also expressed his expectation of a future visit from President Trump, though he noted that the government had not yet been formally notified of any plans. He suggested that details would likely emerge following the Saint Patrick’s Day meeting at the White House.

The Irish Open’s move to Doonbeg has undoubtedly elevated the profile of the tournament and the Trump International Golf Links & Hotel. The potential presence of the U.S. President would further amplify the event’s significance, drawing international attention to both the sport of golf and the ongoing relationship between Ireland and the United States. The coming months will determine whether this potential visit materializes, but the possibility remains a significant talking point within both Irish and international circles.
