A federal appeals court has temporarily blocked California Gov. Gavin Newsom from regaining control of the National Guard in los Angeles. The decision extends President Donald Trump’s authority over the troops, initially federalized in response to protests against immigration enforcement actions.
The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals granted an administrative stay, putting on hold a lower court’s order that would have returned control of the Guard to Newsom. A hearing is scheduled for June 17 to further consider the matter.
The legal battle stems from Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to Los angeles following protests against ICE raids. currently, 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines are stationed in the city. A dusk-to-dawn curfew remains in effect for parts of downtown Los Angeles.
Newsom had earlier celebrated a lower court ruling that would have restored his command of the Guard. “today was realy about a test of democracy, and today we passed the test,” Newsom said Thursday.
