Trump Lawyers Seek Supreme Court Review of California Election Map
Supreme Court Faces Contradictory Arguments in California and Texas Redistricting Cases
Washington - Lawyers who previously defended the Trump governance are now assisting California republicans in requesting the Supreme Court to block the state’s new congressional map. The argument centers on claims that one district in the San Joaquin Valley was intentionally designed to favor Latino voters.
This move follows a similar case in Texas, where Trump’s legal team argued for a Republican-friendly election map, asserting it was a partisan, not racial, gerrymander. Solicitor Gen. D. John Sauer stated on November 20, 2025, that plaintiffs alleging racial gerrymandering “have the heavy burden to show that race was the predominant factor motivating” the map’s creation.
On December 4, 2025, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in favor of Texas Republicans, lifting a lower court order that had blocked their map. The ruling allowed the Texas map, projected to secure five additional House seats for the GOP, to take effect.
Voting rights groups had challenged the Texas map,pointing to Governor greg Abbott’s stated aim to eliminate four “coalition districts” - areas with majority Black and Latino voters that consistently elected Democrats. The Supreme Court’s opinion in the Texas case stated the justices presume state officials act in “good faith” when drawing congressional districts.
