Trump at G7: Trade Tensions and Russia Sanctions in Focus

⁣ ‌ ‌ Updated june 17, ‍2025

KANANASKIS, Canada ‍— ⁣At the G7 summit in Canada, President Donald Trump⁤ expressed reservations⁤ about⁣ imposing further sanctions on Russia, despite his frequent‍ touting of‌ a⁤ strong relationship with president Vladimir‌ Putin. Trump said sanctions are “not so simple,” noting any new measures would carry a “colossal” cost for the United States as well.

Canadian Prime ⁣Minister Mark Carney, the summit’s host, managed to prevent a public display of discord, especially concerning trade. A primary ⁢goal for many leaders was to⁣ de-escalate trade tensions⁣ with Trump, who ⁣has imposed tariffs of at least 10% on most‌ goods imported ⁤into the U.S. and ⁢has⁢ threatened to raise them further.

British Prime⁣ Minister Keir Starmer appeared to make headway on trade ⁣issues for the U.K. Trump said of the British,⁣ “I like ⁢them, it’s the best protection.” The broad outlines of a trade agreement between the U.S. and the ⁢U.K. were previously established in May.

The situation ⁢with the European‍ Union seems more complex. As arriving at‍ the‌ White‍ House, trump has frequently targeted the EU with verbal attacks. A meeting with European ⁢Commission President Ursula⁣ von der Leyen occurred at her request, according to the White House.

Von der ‌Leyen later ⁤stated on X‍ that⁢ U.S.and EU teams would “accelerate the work towards a fair and good” trade agreement. ⁣Canadian authorities said they aim to reach ‌a trade ‍truce with the U.S. within 30 days.

What’s ⁣next

The G7 nations will continue to navigate trade and diplomatic challenges, with ongoing ⁢negotiations aimed at easing tensions and fostering economic cooperation.
