President Donald Trump announced on Thursday he will remove tariffs on Scotch whisky, citing a gesture of goodwill following a state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The decision extends to tariffs on Irish whiskey as well, and aims to bolster trade between Scotland and Kentucky, particularly regarding the use of wooden barrels in the aging process of both whisky and bourbon.

“The King and Queen spent four days in the US on a state visit hosted by Trump where they visited Washington DC, New York and Virginia before they left on Thursday,” according to reporting from the BBC. Trump stated the visit “got me to do something that nobody else was able to do, without hardly even asking.”

The move will lift restrictions on Scotland’s ability to collaborate with the state of Kentucky on whisky and bourbon production. The tariffs had been a point of contention for distillers, who faced significant economic pressure. Industry representatives expressed relief, stating that the removal of tariffs would allow them to “breathe a little easier during a period of significant pressure on the sector.”

“Millions of pounds were being lost every month from the Scottish economy.”

Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney

Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney hailed the decision as “tremendous news for Scotland” and acknowledged the King’s role in facilitating the outcome. He further emphasized the financial impact of the tariffs, stating, “Millions of pounds were being lost every month from the Scottish economy.”

A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace conveyed King Charles’s “sincere gratitude” to President Trump, adding that the King “will be raising a dram to the President’s thoughtfulness.”

In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump framed the decision as an honor to the King and Queen, stating it was “in honour of the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, who have just left the White House, soon headed back to their wonderful country.” He highlighted the importance of the connection between Scotland and Kentucky, noting their shared reliance on wooden barrels for aging their respective spirits.

The tariffs were specifically lifted to enhance the trade of barrels between Scotland and Kentucky, which produces the vast majority of the world’s bourbon. These barrels are crucial to the aging process of both whisky and bourbon, and the renewed trade is expected to benefit both industries.
