Trump and NATO Chief Discuss Global Security Issues
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met for talks on global security. The meeting took place on Friday in Palm Beach, Florida. NATO released a brief statement confirming the discussions.
The statement did not specify the topics discussed. This was Rutte’s first meeting with Trump since he won the election on November 5. Rutte previously congratulated Trump and emphasized the importance of strong leadership for NATO.
Trump has often criticized NATO. He has expressed concerns about the defense spending of member nations. He believes many countries do not contribute enough financially and has referred to them as “leeches” on U.S. resources. Trump has also suggested that the U.S. might not defend NATO countries that do not meet their defense spending targets.
Alongside his meeting with Trump, Rutte and his team also met U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, Trump’s choice for national security adviser, and other members of Trump’s security team.
Rutte assumed his role as NATO Secretary General in October.
