Trump-Musk Feud Escalates Over Tax Bill Criticism
Updated June 08, 2025
President Donald Trump says he’s done with Elon Musk after the billionaire criticized trump’s proposed tax legislation. In an interview Saturday with NBC News, Trump stated he has no intention of repairing their relationship, deeming Musk “disrespectful to the office of the President.”
The public spat ignited after Musk voiced concerns about Trump’s tax bill, which the president has dubbed his “One Big Beautiful Bill.” The feud played out across social media, with Trump threatening to terminate government contracts and subsidies benefiting Musk’s companies. Musk, in turn, posted and then deleted a reference to Trump’s alleged connection to the “Epstein files.”
Trump also warned Musk against funding Democratic candidates who might challenge Republican lawmakers supporting the bill, hinting at “serious consequences.”
Musk had previously indicated he would reduce his political spending after contributing heavily to Trump’s 2024 campaign. He stated last month at the Qatar Economic Forum that he didn’t “currently see a reason” to engage in further political spending.
Following the initial exchange, Musk removed several posts from X, including the Epstein reference and a video seemingly showing Trump with Jeffrey Epstein in the 1990s. He also deleted a post calling a Trump comment an “obvious lie,” along with another stating SpaceX would promptly decommission it’s Dragon spacecraft.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized the importance of passing the tax bill, stating the administration’s commitment to ”cutting waste, fraud, and abuse from our federal government on behalf of taxpayers.”
The dispute between Trump and Musk has already impacted financial markets, affecting Tesla stock and Dogecoin. A White House official said Trump is considering selling his Tesla.
Vice President JD Vance weighed in on the feud, calling Musk’s criticism of Trump a “huge mistake.” Speaking on ”This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von,” Vance suggested Musk should “chill out a little bit” to resolve the conflict. Musk responded to Vance’s comments on X with a simple, “Cool.”
I think it’s a very bad thing, because he’s very disrespectful. you could not disrespect the office of the President.
What’s next
The evolving relationship between Trump and Musk remains uncertain, with potential ramifications for both business and politics. Whether musk will heed Vance’s advice and attempt to reconcile with Trump remains to be seen, as the future of Trump’s tax bill hangs in the balance.
