Trump and musk Relationship Fractures Over Spending Bill
Updated June 4, 2025
The alliance between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk appears to be on the rocks. Musk recently criticized
Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” calling the congressional spending package a “revolting abomination” on X. He
added, “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
This outburst follows Musk’s departure from his role as a special adviser to Trump, a position he held for
four months. During that time, he led the Department of Government Efficiency, aiming to cut federal spending. The department oversaw the firing of thousands of government employees.

Musk initially supported Trump during last year’s election, donating over $288 million to the MAGA cause.
However,this endorsement has negatively impacted Musk’s businesses,notably Tesla,which saw a 71%
decline in first-quarter profits.
Despite the apparent discord, one White House source told Axios that Trump and Musk “remain friends and
allies.” However, another source suggested Musk feels slighted by how his time in the management concluded.
Several factors contribute to the growing distance between them.
One key issue is the elimination of the EV tax credit, worth up to $7,500, in Trump’s bill.Tesla reportedly
spent $240,000 lobbying to preserve this credit.Despite musk’s behind-the-scenes pleas, the credit was cut.
In March, Trump attempted to promote Tesla by showcasing the company’s cars at the White House.

Axios also reported that Musk wished to continue his role as a special government employee beyond the
130-day limit, despite reported clashes with Trump’s cabinet. An extension agreement was not reached.
Another point of contention was Musk’s request for the Federal Aviation Administration to use Starlink
satellite technology. This proposal was rejected due to conflict-of-interest concerns and technological
limitations.
“You can’t have air traffic control just run off satellites,” a source told Axios.
Musk’s presence in the White House also raised conflict-of-interest concerns. Forty-two democrats wrote to the
pentagon’s inspector general, expressing alarm over SpaceX’s potential involvement in Trump’s Golden Dome
anti-missile defense system.

Moreover, Trump’s decision to withdraw Jared Isaacman, a Musk ally, as his nominee for NASA administrator
fueled rumors of discord. Some suggested Sergio gor, director of the Office of Presidential Personnel, was
behind the decision as a final insult to Musk. However, complaints from republican senators about Isaacman’s
history as a Democratic donor were also cited as a reason.
“Perception is reality, though, and I’m pretty sure Elon thought the NASA situation was a last insult,” an
official told Axios. “So here we are.”
