Trump Narrowly Escapes Second Assassination Bid, Vows to Press On Amid Gunman’s Anti-Putin Rant
Donald Trump Survives Assassination Attempt at Florida Golf Course
US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt while playing golf at his golf course in Florida on Sunday. Trump is safe, and the shooter, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was arrested locally. The FBI believes this is an assassination attempt on Trump and is launching an investigation.
Law enforcement agencies held a press conference to explain the incident, saying that the gunman was hiding in the jungle near the boundary of the golf course, about 360 to 450 meters away from Trump. The Secret Service personnel responsible for protecting Trump exchanged fire with the gunman and fired four shots. The gunman then left the weapon and other items and fled the scene in a car.
Investigators found an AK-47 rifle, two backpacks, an action camera with video recording function, and other items at the scene. Authorities launched a pursuit based on photos and license plates of the vehicles taken by witnesses and later found the vehicle involved in a nearby county. Police said someone was arrested, but did not disclose details such as the suspect’s identity or motive.
Routh has repeatedly commented on politics and criticized Trump on social platforms. Some media described him as an ardent supporter of Ukraine. He has made many remarks in support of Ukraine, saying he is willing to fight on the border between Poland and Ukraine. He has also called on foreigners to join the war and openly recruited Afghan soldiers, requiring them to provide copies of their passports for arrangement to Ukraine.
The White House issued a statement stating that President Joe Biden and Democratic presidential candidate and Vice President Harris had been reported to the incident. Biden said: “I am relieved that Trump is safe and sound, and law enforcement is actively investigating this incident to gather more details about what happened. As I have said many times, our country has no place for political violence or any violence.”
Trump also reported that he was safe in two fundraising emails. He wrote in the email: ”There are gunshots near me, but before the rumors start to get out of control, I want you to hear this: I am safe and everything is safe.” He added in the email: “Nothing can slow me down and I will never surrender!” Trump emphasized that his determination will only become stronger after another assassination attempt.
Routh’s son Oran accepted an interview and said he was shocked that his father was involved in the case. He also mentioned that the other party had only received a lot of “beef jerky” before, describing the incident as not his style.
This is not the first time Trump has been the target of an assassination attempt. On July 13 this year, Trump suffered an “attempted assassination” at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was wounded by a bullet in his right ear. One spectator died and two other spectators were seriously injured. The gunman was killed on the spot by Secret Service personnel.
