National Guard Deployed to Los Angeles Amid Immigration Protests
Updated June 8, 2025
The Trump administration is deploying the National Guard to los Angeles in response to large-scale protests that followed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. The move, authorized under Title 10, has sparked controversy and debate over federal authority and local control amid ongoing concerns about immigration enforcement.
President Trump addressed the situation on Truth Social, criticizing California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. He asserted that if local authorities could not manage the situation, the federal government would intervene to address the “riots & looters.”
According to a White House memo, at least 2,000 National Guard troops are being deployed for 60 days, or at the discretion of the Secretary of Defense. A Defense Department official confirmed that most of the soldiers are from the California National Guard.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated on social media that the National Guard was being mobilized to support federal law enforcement in Los Angeles. He also indicated that active-duty Marines from Camp Pendleton could be deployed if the violence escalates.
Gov. Newsom responded to the deployment order on X, stating that the federal government’s actions were “purposefully inflammatory” and would only escalate tensions. he maintained that local authorities could access law enforcement assistance and that there was no unmet need.
The federal government is sowing chaos so they can have an excuse to escalate. that is not the way any civilized country behaves.
Mayor Bass said city officials were in contact with officials in Washington, D.C.,and working with law enforcement to find the best path forward.
The deployment invokes Title 10 authority, effectively waiving the Posse Comitatus Act, which generally restricts the use of the military for domestic law enforcement.
