Trump Eyes expanded National Guard Role in Immigration, Protests
Updated June 14, 2025
The Trump administration is considering a broader deployment of the National Guard to bolster immigration enforcement and manage protests, signaling a potential shift in the military’s domestic role. This comes after the president sent National Guard troops to Los Angeles amid demonstrations sparked by recent immigration raids.
President Trump indicated this week that the Los Angeles deployment, involving thousands of National Guard members, might be “the first, perhaps, of many.” He warned other cities that they would face similar responses if they followed Los Angeles’ path.
Tom Homan, the administration’s border czar, told *The Washington Post* that discussions about mobilizing the National Guard for immigration assistance have been ongoing for months. He clarified that further deployments would depend on whether other cities experience similar unrest. While peaceful protests are acceptable, Homan said, the president would consider military intervention on a case-by-case basis if situations escalate.
Homan outlined potential support roles for the military, including security, transportation, infrastructure, and intelligence. However, he emphasized that the national guard would not be involved in making immigration arrests.
The deployment to Los Angeles followed a series of immigration raids that led to the arrest of at least 330 undocumented immigrants. While moast protests remained peaceful, tensions rose, prompting an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew in parts of downtown Los Angeles. Demonstrations have also spread to other cities, reflecting solidarity with Los Angeles and opposition to the administration’s immigration policies.
According to the *Associated Press*, the commander overseeing federal troops in Los Angeles said that 500 National Guard members had been trained to assist immigration agents. However, officials were uncertain about the duration of the military presence once the demonstrations subsided.
The legality of the federalization of California’s National Guard is currently being challenged in court. A federal judge initially ruled the move illegal and ordered control returned to the state, but the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily blocked the decision, granting the Trump administration a temporary victory.
Following the stay, President Trump posted on Truth Social, “If I didn’t send the Military into Los Angeles, that city would be burning to the ground right now. We saved L.A. thank you for the Decision!!!”
What’s next
The courts will continue to debate the legality of the federal deployment of the National Guard in California, while the Trump administration weighs further deployments in response to immigration enforcement and potential unrest in other cities.
