President Donald Trump has nominated Dr. Erica Schwartz to serve as the next director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, filling a leadership role that has seen multiple temporary appointees since his return to office.
The nomination was announced on Thursday, April 16, 2026, through a post on Truth Social, where Trump described Schwartz as “incredibly talented” and a “STAR!” He highlighted her background as a former deputy surgeon general during his first term and her service as a doctor in the United States Military.
Schwartz, a retired Coast Guard rear admiral, currently serves as the Coast Guard’s director of health, safety and work-life. In that role, she oversees a system of 41 clinics and 150 sick bays. She has also instituted anthrax and smallpox vaccination policies, overseen disaster responses, and contributed to the federal response to the Ebola crisis.
