Trump Nominates Lori Chavez-DeRemer as U.S. Labor Secretary: Impact on Oregon and American Workers
President-Elect Trump Nominates Lori Chavez-DeRemer for U.S. Labor Secretary
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Lori Chavez-DeRemer, the outgoing U.S. Representative from Oregon, as his choice for U.S. Labor Secretary. Trump stated that Chavez-DeRemer has worked hard with both business and labor sectors to strengthen America’s workforce. He expressed hope for creating opportunities for American workers, expanding training and apprenticeships, increasing wages, and improving working conditions.
Chavez-DeRemer thanked Trump in a post on X after the nomination. Trump aims to revitalize manufacturing in the U.S. and has suggested removing taxes on tips and overtime. However, political science professor Jim Moore noted that Chavez-DeRemer lacks extensive experience in business and unions.
The U.S. Labor Secretary’s role involves enforcing labor laws and managing relationships between businesses and employees. Chavez-DeRemer won her congressional seat in Oregon’s 5th District in 2022 but lost her recent reelection battle to Democratic candidate Janelle Bynum.
Despite her defeat, Chavez-DeRemer’s nomination will not change the Republican majority in the House. Moore explained that her connection to the Teamsters Union, which did not support Vice President Kamala Harris in the election, makes her nomination significant for Trump.
Chavez-DeRemer has strong ties to Happy Valley, where she previously served as mayor. This nomination represents an opportunity for Oregon to have a voice in national decisions, with Moore emphasizing its importance for the state.
KATU News has reached out for comments from Chavez-DeRemer’s office but has not yet received a response. The last Oregonian to hold a cabinet position was former Portland Mayor Neil Goldschmidt, who served as Transportation Secretary over 40 years ago. Moore noted that Oregon will now have representation in cabinet meetings, which could benefit the state.
