Trump Criticizes Obama, Trudeau Over russia’s G7 Exclusion
Updated June 16, 2025
Former President Donald Trump has blamed Barack Obama and Justin Trudeau for excluding Russia from what was formerly the Group of eight (G8), now the Group of Seven (G7). Trump called the move a “serious mistake,” suggesting it may have contributed to the Russia-ukraine war. He argued that if he were president four years ago,the war would not be happening.
Russia was initially included in the G8, but was suspended in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea and initial incursions into Ukraine. These actions set the stage for the full-scale invasion in 2022.
Trump also mentioned a recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which thay discussed the escalating conflict between iran and Israel. Both leaders expressed a desire to see the conflict de-escalate.
“president Putin called this morning to very nicely wish me a Happy Birthday, but to more importantly, talk about Iran, a country he knows very well,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end,” he added.
The conversation also touched briefly on the Russia-Ukraine war and ongoing prisoner exchanges. While Ukraine was not the primary focus, Trump noted that they discussed potential exchanges and Putin’s interest in resuming peace talks after June 22.
