Trump Threatens Iran Bombing Amid Nuclear Program Concerns
Updated June 27, 2025
President Donald Trump stated he would “absolutely” consider another bombing of Iran if intelligence indicated the country was enriching uranium to a concerning level. He made the remark in response to a question from Nomia Iqbal of the BBC at a white House briefing.
Trump said he would “without question” order an attack. The U.S. recently intervened in the conflict between Israel and Iran, using “bunker buster” bombs to strike key nuclear sites before Trump called for a quick ceasefire. The role of the U.S. remains central to de-escalation.
Despite the strikes, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said they achieved nothing meaningful. Trump, however, reiterated his claim that Iran’s nuclear sites were “obliterated.”
In a Truth Social post, Trump claimed he knew the ayatollah’s hiding place and personally prevented U.S. and Israeli forces from targeting him. The Iranian leader reportedly went into hiding during the two-week war with Israel.
While all parties claimed victory,Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi admitted the bombings caused “excessive and serious” damage to Iran’s nuclear facilities. The nuclear program is a key point of contention.
Trump responded to Khamenei’s comments by repeating his assertion that Iran was “decimated.”
“Why would the so-called ‘Supreme Leader’ Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, of the war-torn country of Iran, say so blatantly and foolishly that he won the war with Israel, when he knows his statement is a lie,” Trump added.
Trump also said he halted work on sanction relief after the ayatollah’s statement, despite previously considering it. Iran maintains its nuclear ambitions are for civilian purposes only.
The conflict began with Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear sites and military infrastructure, resulting in the deaths of nuclear scientists and military commanders. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “if not stopped,Iran could produce a nuclear weapon in a very short time.”
CBS News reported the White House considered options to restart negotiations, including funding for a civilian, non-enrichment nuclear program. However, Iran denied it would resume nuclear talks after Trump said negotiations would begin again next week at a NATO summit in the Hague.
Iran’s health ministry reported 610 deaths during the 12 days of air attacks, while Israeli authorities reported 28 deaths in Israel.
What’s next
The situation remains volatile, with the potential for further escalation depending on intelligence regarding Iran’s nuclear activities and the diplomatic efforts of involved parties.
