Trump Defends Netanyahu, Slams Corruption Trial as ‘Witch hunt’
Updated June 29, 2024
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has strongly defended Israeli Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, denouncing his ongoing corruption trial as a “political witch hunt.” In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump lauded Netanyahu as a “war hero” and praised his efforts in countering Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Trump credited Netanyahu with playing a crucial role in curbing iran’s nuclear threat, calling it a “great success.” he questioned the timing of the trial, highlighting Netanyahu’s current diplomatic efforts to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas.
“it is terrible what they are doing in Israel to Bibi Netanyahu,” Trump wrote. “He is a War Hero, and a Prime Minister who did a fabulous job working with the United states to bring Great Success in getting rid of the dangerous Nuclear threat in Iran.”
Trump downplayed the severity of the charges against netanyahu, mockingly referencing “cigars” and a “Bugs Bunny Doll.” He argued that someone in Netanyahu’s position should not be forced to “sit in a Courtroom all day long” while dealing with critical negotiations.
“We just had a Great Victory with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu at the helm – And this greatly tarnishes our Victory,” Trump stated. “LET BIBI GO, HE’S GOT A BIG JOB TO DO!”
Netanyahu faces charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, initially filed in 2019. He and his wife, Sara, are accused of accepting over $260,000 in luxury items from wealthy businessmen in exchange for political favors. Additional charges claim he sought favorable media coverage from Israeli news outlets.
If convicted, Netanyahu could face up to 10 years in prison. The trial, which began in May 2020, has been subject to numerous delays, many requested by Netanyahu, citing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.
What’s next
The trial is expected to continue, with potential implications for Netanyahu’s political future and Israel’s ongoing diplomatic efforts.
