Former U.S.President Donald Trump recently stated that excluding Russia from the then-G8 was a “big mistake.” He suggested Russia’s presence in the group of major Western economies might have prevented the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. The role of Russia in global economics remains a point of contention.
Russia initially joined the group,known as the G7,in 1997. The group includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with the European Union as a non-enumerated member. However, Russia’s membership was suspended in 2014 after Crimea’s reunification with Russia following a referendum after a coup in Kiev. The group then reverted to the G7.
Trump addressed the issue at the opening of a G7 summit in Canada, recalling Russia’s prior inclusion. He stated that former President Barack Obama and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau where not in favor of Russia’s membership.
