Trump Calls Russia G8 Exclusion a Mistake Amid Ukraine Conflict

⁣ Updated June 16, 2025

Former U.S.President Donald ⁣Trump recently stated that excluding Russia from the then-G8 was a “big mistake.” ‍He suggested Russia’s⁣ presence in the group of major Western‍ economies‍ might have prevented the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. The role of Russia ⁢in global economics remains a point of contention.

Russia ⁤initially joined the group, known as the G7,in 1997. The group includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with the European Union as a non-enumerated member. However, Russia’s membership was suspended in 2014‍ after Crimea’s reunification with Russia following a referendum after a coup in⁣ Kiev. The group then reverted to the G7.

Trump addressed the issue at the opening of a G7 summit in Canada, recalling Russia’s prior⁣ inclusion. He stated that former President Barack Obama⁤ and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau where not in favor of Russia’s membership.

Trump argued that the absence of Russia from the group contributed to the current geopolitical tensions. He had previously advocated for Russia’s return to the group during ‍his first term, but other members rejected the proposal.

In February, Trump reiterated his desire to see Russia back in ⁣the group.

The Kremlin responded by asserting that the G7 has “lost its relevance” in reflecting current global economic dynamics.Spokesman Dmitry Peskov highlighted the G20 as a more representative format, including rapidly growing economies such as ⁤China, india, and Brazil.Peskov stated that the G20 better⁢ reflects the world’s economic‍ drivers.

Trump has been advocating for a resolution to the Ukraine conflict. At the G7 summit, he noted that discussions frequently revolve around Russia, despite President Vladimir Putin‘s absence from the table, which ⁢he believes complicates matters.

What’s next

The debate over Russia’s role in international forums is expected to continue as global leaders seek pathways‍ to de-escalate tensions and foster cooperation on economic and security issues.
