Trump Defends Tariff Role Amid “TACO trade” Critique
Updated May 28, 2025
President Donald Trump on Wednesday addressed criticism of his tariff strategy, dismissing the notion that he backs down from his threats. The approach, dubbed the “TACO trade” – Trump Always Chickens out – suggests he announces tariffs, causing market instability, only to later ease them.
Trump, responding to a question at the White House, argued his actions have strengthened the U.S. position in trade talks. He specifically cited the European Union, which he initially targeted with a proposed 50% tariff. The tariff, announced May 23, was delayed until july 9 after a request from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The stock market initially declined following Trump’s may 23 tariff announcement. However, indexes rebounded after the delay was announced. Trump maintains the tariff threat initiated meaningful discussions with the EU.
“After I did what I did, they said, ‘We’ll meet anytime you want,’” Trump said, referring to the EU.
He added, regarding the “chickening out” accusation, “It’s called negotiation.”
Trump expressed frustration that any eventual deal would be dismissed as a sign of weakness. “The sad thing is, now, when I make a deal with them, it’s something much more reasonable, they’ll say, ‘Oh, he was chicken, he was chicken,’” trump said. “That’s so amazing.”
