In an interview with the media on Thursday, Trump once again “released a big move”, promising that if he is elected president, he will not only protect the operation of in-vitro fertilization (IVF), but also provide it to the public free of charge.
Trump made the promise in an interview with NBC News, saying the cost of IVF would either be covered by the government or the government would “force insurance companies to reimburse them.”
After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year, several red states immediately passed strict abortion bans, making abortion one of the focal issues in this year’s election, and the issue of in vitro fertilization has also attracted attention.
Earlier this year, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that embryos created by in vitro fertilization — known as test-tube babies — should also be considered “human beings,” meaning that destroying them could constitute a violation of the abortion ban, essentially upending the state’s test-tube baby industry.
Currently, most people’s health insurance does not cover IVF. This measure is very expensive, costing an average of about 20,000 yuan per person each time.
The policy proposals announced by Trump on Thursday are expected to be welcomed by some centrist voters, but may also face backlash within the Republican Party.
This is also the latest manifestation of Trump’s inconsistent stance on abortion. At the beginning of his presidency, before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Trump urged the Senate to pass a 20-week abortion ban. But after leaving office, especially since abortion began to become one of the focus issues of the presidential election, Trump has gradually moved away from the mainstream Republicans’ opposition to abortion and began to support abortion rights more.
In addition, Trump once again criticized the current abortion restrictions in Florida, where he lives. The state only allows pregnant women to have an abortion within 6 weeks of pregnancy. “That’s too short; more time should be given,” Trump said. During this year’s presidential election, Florida voters will also hold a referendum on a proposal to protect abortion rights, but Trump did not clearly respond to how he will vote then.
