President Donald Trump announced on April 12, 2026, that the United States Navy will begin a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and interdict vessels that have paid tolls to Iran. The decision follows the failure of face-to-face peace talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, led by Vice President JD Vance, to reach an agreement regarding Iran’s nuclear program and the end of the war.
The blockade order, communicated via a post on Truth Social on the morning of April 12, 2026, takes effect immediately. The U.S. Navy is instructed to block all ships attempting to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz and to seek and interdict any vessel in international waters that has paid a toll to Iran.
President Trump further stated that the U.S. Navy will begin destroying mines laid by Iranians in the straits. He warned that Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!
The Iranian ‘Toll Booth’ Regime
The U.S. Action is a direct response to what analysts from Lloyd’s List Intelligence describe as a de facto toll booth
regime imposed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the Strait of Hormuz. Under this regime, vessels are required to submit full documentation, obtain clearance codes, and accept IRGC-escorted passage through a single controlled corridor.
Reports indicate that at least two vessels traversing the strait have paid these fees to Iran in Chinese yuan to ensure safe passage. Iran has previously indicated it might seek to impose a toll on all ships passing through the waterway as part of a long-term peace deal.
Impact on Global Shipping and Tankers
The blockade introduces significant uncertainty for global shipping routes, oil transport, and maritime security. Intertanko, a group representing more than half of the world’s oil tanker fleet and 190 independent operators, has advised its members not to use the strait.

Phillip Belcher of Intertanko stated that the organization does not believe the payment of tolls is the correct approach and argued that charging a toll is against the whole idea of international laws and free passage through international waterways

We do not believe the Strait is safe until there is a lasting cessation of conflict, where all attacks against ships have halted and where there is some sort of coalition-of-the-willing oversight for ships to go through, where Iran does not have sovereignty of the strait.

Diplomatic Failure in Islamabad
The escalation comes after the collapse of diplomatic efforts. Vice President JD Vance met with representatives of the Iranian government in Islamabad on Saturday, April 11, 2026, to finalize details of a ceasefire deal. While a two-week ceasefire had been agreed upon five days prior, the direct talks ended without a final agreement.
