Former U.S. President Donald Trump said he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday about the recent Ukrainian drone attacks targeting Russian airbases. The conversation, according to trump, lasted over an hour and addressed the ongoing conflict.
The Ukraine drone attacks on Monday struck multiple Russian airfields, from Murmansk to Siberia. Ukraine claims the strikes damaged or destroyed roughly 40 Russian military aircraft, including long-range bombers. Moscow acknowledged the attacks but has not verified the extent of the damage, stating most drones were intercepted.
Trump revealed the call via a post on Truth Social, characterizing it as “a good conversation.” He noted that the discussion included “the attack on Russia’s docked airplanes, by Ukraine, and also various other attacks that have been taking place by both sides,” but cautioned that it was “not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace.”
Putin, according to Trump, “did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields.” The trump-Putin call comes amid heightened tensions in the region.
Moscow confirmed the phone call. Yury Ushakov, a top foreign policy adviser to Putin, said the leaders agreed to maintain contact regarding Ukraine, including at the highest levels. Putin reportedly informed Trump that Kiev attempted to sabotage Russia-Ukraine talks by launching strikes on Russian civilian sites under orders from Ukrainian leadership.
Putin also labeled the railway sabotage in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk Regions a “terrorist act” by the “illegitimate regime in Kiev,” accusing it of “gradually turning into a terrorist institution.” The Russian response remains to be seen.
