U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected a recent peace proposal from Iran intended to end the conflict between the two nations, stating he was not satisfied
with the terms of the offer. The rejection occurred shortly after the plan was delivered, according to reports from May 1, 2026.
Speaking to reporters at Palm Beach International Airport in Florida on May 2, 2026, before boarding Air Force One, President Trump indicated that he is currently reviewing a 14-point proposal from Tehran. While the administration is examining the document, the president warned that the United States could resume military strikes if the Iranian government misbehaves
.
The diplomatic friction comes as the U.S. Maintains a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. Reporting from the region indicates that maritime traffic through the waterway has dropped by more than 90%, with fewer than 10 ships making the journey daily. Most of the remaining traffic consists of Iran-linked vessels, and the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control has warned shipping companies that they could face sanctions if they pay Iran for safe passage.
Military Escalation and Arms Procurement
Parallel to the stalled negotiations, the United States is accelerating the delivery of military hardware to regional allies. Secretary of State Marco Rubio approved expedited arms transfers to Israel, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates on May 2, 2026, bypassing standard congressional review to rush air defense missiles and laser guidance systems to the region.
Israel has also moved forward with significant procurement of U.S. Aircraft. The Israel Defense Ministry signed a deal to acquire 25 Boeing F-15IA fighter jets. Various reports place the value of this contract between $5.2 billion and $8.6 billion, with deliveries of the initial 25 aircraft scheduled to begin in 2031.
Regional Instability in Lebanon
The instability extends into Lebanon, where the Israeli military and Hezbollah, an Iran-backed armed group, have continued to trade strikes. The Israeli military reported conducting overnight attacks on structures used by Hezbollah across southern Lebanon, which occurred shortly after a ceasefire in the area had been extended.
The Israeli Defense Forces also targeted infrastructure in the Beqaa Valley, marking the first time in three weeks that the area had been struck. These operations were described as responses to explosive drones and other attacks launched by Hezbollah against Israeli troops.
Diplomatic Context
The current deadlock follows a series of attempts to establish a ceasefire. On May 1, 2026, President Trump informed Congress that hostilities in Iran have terminated
following a two-week ceasefire imposed on April 7, which has since been extended. This announcement coincided with a deadline under the War Powers Resolution of 1973.
Internationally, Russia has positioned itself as a potential mediator. Following a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia is ready to offer goodwill or mediation services
in future negotiations between the U.S. And Iran.
